Overfunctioning is not a wellness plan. Grinding harder, stacking more stress on top of stress, and patching the symptoms with wine, sleep aids, and caffeine is a loop many high-achieving women know by heart.

In this episode of The Healthy Hustle Podcast, Rachel Feldman sits down with Katie Hardie, founder of My PEAK, to talk about perfectionism, relative energy deficiency, nervous system regulation, and why recovery is the missing half of peak performance. Katie shares her Midwest grind origin story, what DUTCH labs reveal about chronic fight-or-flight, how she blew out her ACL after burning the candle at both ends, and the morning rituals that help her stay regulated while running a business.

Katie Hardie is a Board-Certified Holistic Nutritionist and FDN Practitioner who helps high performers reclaim their energy, optimize nutrition, and achieve lasting results through bioindividual, science-driven programs. She combines her lived experience as an athlete, corporate professional, and mom with advanced training in nutrition, performance psychology, and functional health. The Marathon Grind vs Sprinter Vibrancy

Katie grew up in the Midwest around hardworking people who received recognition for constant doing. Recovery was not part of the conversation. She describes the difference between a marathon grind that never stops and sprinter vibrancy: go hard, then actually breathe so you can go hard again.

Without that breather, high achievers slide into burnout. For Katie, that showed up mentally, physically, and hormonally as early as high school through overachieving perfectionism and a life spent fighting the clock.

When Overdoing Becomes Relative Energy Deficiency

Overtraining, under-recovering, and under-fueling put the body in harm’s way. Katie names what is now often called REDs (relative energy deficiency in sport): sex hormones downstream of stress hormones go offline, periods can disappear or arrive late, bone mineral density suffers, mood gets more anxious or depressed, and sleep falls apart.

Her first clinical exposure was a progesterone patch with no conversation about the upstream drivers. Rachel shares a parallel story of perfectionism, chronic UTIs, birth control as a quick fix, and later estrogen dominance without anyone asking what the liver was doing under chronic fight-or-flight.

Cortisol Is Not the Enemy. Stuck-On Cortisol Is.

Katie loves the DUTCH because it visually shows what high performers already feel: the body was designed to fight, run, or freeze in short bursts, then shut the stress response down. Surviving today always outranks tomorrow’s projects, which is why cortisol is necessary.

The problem is 24/7 activation. Chronically elevated cortisol robs tomorrow’s capacity and can slow digestive enzymes, detox pathways, sex hormone production, and thyroid function so the body can keep manufacturing stress chemistry. Anxiety alone can trigger that physiology even on the couch in pajamas. Workouts do too, which is helpful when recovery is designed into the plan and damaging when it is not.

The Vicious Stress Stack

Katie maps a loop many women live in: mental stress and anxiety, then a hard run that layers more stress, then wine as a reward, then a sleep aid when sleep fails, then caffeine to survive the groggy morning. Capacity to go high keeps shrinking without walk-level recovery in between.

When cortisol stays in breakdown mode and DHEA cannot keep up, people get the subtle symptoms everyone shrugs off: harder mornings, more caffeine, less desire to train, and everyone annoying you. As Katie puts it, common does not mean normal.

Human Doing vs Human Being

A lot of self-worth gets tied to accomplishments and the badge of constant productivity. Taking ten minutes for the nervous system feels like stealing from the to-do list, but Katie reframes it as energy potential: you cannot pour from an empty cup.

Patterns that took years or decades to build do not unwind overnight. Clients often notice the iceberg only when it pops above the water. Longer programs give the nervous system time to rewire, and as energy returns, goals often shift from escaping the hole to training for something specific with smarter effort instead of harder effort.

Anxious Hustle vs Regulated Excited Energy

Rachel and Katie connect perfectionism to childhood drivers: needing to be seen, loved, or proven worthy. For holistic entrepreneurs, business and personal patterns are intertwined. The question becomes what you are running from and why you keep yourself so on.

Healthy hustle still means putting out fires and juggling buckets, but from confidence instead of past trauma. Excited energy that is calm and regulated lets things roll off your shoulders. Familiar go-go-go can be a trauma response; when that same drive is pointed at the right recovery and a plan that fits the body, people can shift quickly.

The ACL Wake-Up Call and Listening to Her Own Advice

Katie ran DUTCH labs during an extremely stressful season while burning the candle at both ends: late nights, early mornings, overtraining, under-recovering, more alcohol, and more inflammatory food. On a backcountry ski hut trip her knee bent backward and her ACL blew out. When the labs came back, the injury made sense on paper even though she looked fine on the outside.

She stopped using intense cardio as her only nervous system strategy, started walking more, added breath work, and rebuilt a morning hour she actually looks forward to: space before the house wakes up, a hot drink, HeartMath-style belly breathing, and cooking while listening to something she enjoys. Buffers between meetings matter too, so coming down does not depend on alcohol or a sleep aid.

Tools That Make You Unstoppable

Katie’s closing message is ownership. When you learn the tools that work for your specific body, you are unstoppable. Rachel closes by reminding coaches that you will not build a thriving business from the struggle zone forever, and that working with a practitioner who understands regulation and recovery matters.

Katie’s free gift is a 10-minute grocery shopping list (with recipes) from her culinary background, designed to get you in and out of the store and set your week up for energetic success: https://www.mypeak365.com/shoppinglist

Your Action Step

Protect one recovery margin this week: a buffer between meetings, a walk instead of a stress-stack workout, or a first-hour morning ritual with breath work before you hit the ground running. Keep it small enough that your nervous system can actually come down.

Final Thoughts

Peak performance is not more grind. It is push and recover on purpose. Common burnout symptoms are not normal, cortisol is not the enemy, and overfunctioning will never be a wellness plan. Learn the tools that work for your body, and you stop depending on quick fixes to get through the day.
